The Ska Review

Posted by: laurages on: July 13, 2009

So, I spent this Saturday evening at the lovely Starland Ballroom to see the legendary Reel Big Fish put on a legendary reel big fish style show. Before I tell you all about it, I’d like to mention the first opening band, the Waffle Stompers. Here is a band I did not know too much about before the show, but let me tell you…they’re fantastic. Basically if you like ska, you’ll like the Waffle Stompers. And also they’re pretty sexy, so if you like sex, you’ll like the Waffle Stompers…juuuust kidding (maybe). So then the supervillains played next. They creep me out, enough said. The English Beat then played a full set. Which was entertaining enough even though I wouldn’t really consider myself a huge fan. Uh..the lead singer, Dave Wakeling kept saying something about all Reel Big Fish fans being virgins or something but he’s so  British I’m not actually sure if that’s what he was saying at all.

033ANYWAY. Reel Big Fish. Every time I see them (which I do at least once a year) they get more and more insane which equals more and more fun. And Aaron Barrett’s hair looks more and more like Elvis’. What is there really to say, there’s nothing like a sweaty ska show. And Barrett is without a doubt the king of third wave ska if for no other reason than that he keeps writing songs about getting drunk and hating everyone and they keep being awesome. And seeing Reel Big Fish live is like a brightly colored love/hate fest…and it’s awesome.

New Jersey may be full of pollution, traffic, and guys wearing too much hair gel...gross. But I swear we've got great music too.
